Overview

Heavy-Duty Bearing Shells are critical components designed for large rotating machinery under extreme working conditions, supporting heavy radial loads, high temperatures, and continuous operation. Manufactured with a high-strength steel back and precision-cast Babbitt alloy lining, they feature excellent wear resistance, shock absorption, and thermal conductivity. Widely used in 300MW air-cooled turbo generators, steam turbines, rolling mills, large compressors, and marine power systems, these bearing shells ensure stable shaft support, low friction, and long service life in heavy industrial applications.

Babbitt Metal 3D Additive Manufacturing vs. Traditional Centrifugal Casting🧾

1. Traditional Centrifugal Casting
Centrifugal casting is the classic method for producing Babbitt metal bearings. However, it comes with significant limitations:
Production Process:
  1. Preheat the workpiece to 300°C and coat the inner surface with flux;
  2. Tin the inner surface by dipping into a molten tin bath;
  3. Secure the bearing on a centrifugal casting machine and set the speed according to formula;
  4. Pour molten Babbitt metal into the mold for forming.
Disadvantages:
  • Material Segregation: Prone to alloy segregation during cooling, generating internal stress which causes “bearing stripping” during operation, significantly reducing performance and service life.
  • Inconsistent Quality: The cooling speed is difficult to control precisely. The process is labor-intensive and highly relies on manual experience, leading to unstable and non-reproducible product quality.
  • High Waste & Pollution: High labor intensity, severe material waste, and environmentally unfriendly production.
  • Lack of Flexibility: The casting process cannot be paused, limiting process control and customization capabilities.

 
2. 3D Additive Manufacturing (Our Technology)

  1. Superior Bearing Quality: Each layer thickness is controlled within ≤2mm. The alloy composition is uniform without segregation, fundamentally eliminating performance defects caused by uneven material.
  2. Higher Bond Strength: Achieves an exceptional bond strength of 80-100MPa (compared to only ~55MPa in centrifugal casting). Tested average bond strength reaches 97MPa, doubling the service life of the bearing.

  4. Stable & Automated Production: The process can be paused and adjusted at any time, with minimal environmental impact. It enables full automation, ensuring exceptional stability and consistency.
